Sterilray is proud to announce a partnership with Gordon College to tackle persistent mold challenges in their facilities. Mold contamination is a serious concern for any institutional building. It affects air quality, structural integrity, and the health of all occupants. Traditional remediation methods can be costly, disruptive, and often only address surface-level or visible occurrences. To address this issue, Gordon College now utilizes Sterilray's advanced Far-UV disinfection technology to eliminate their recurrent mold problem. This solution at last provides a safe and healthy campus environment for students, faculty, and staff alike.
Peter Coleman is the mechanical/electrical manager at Gordon College. He felt that although janitorial staff worked rigorously to address any mold issues as they surfaced, the persistence of recurrent mold remained a problem. Coleman reveals that “not all of [their] equipment is able to dehumidify the air,” especially during the summer months. He explains that droplets from metals in ducts and other connecting HVAC units are much colder than the surrounding air. The resultant droplets become potential mold spore colonies that normally need habitual cleaning. Futhermore chairs with older fabric were “very complex for them to clean,” had an “unpleasant smell,” and students would often have to be relocated for janitorial staff to clean surfaces that were “not as clean as they could be.” By and large, the mold cleaning and disinfection process was very much a reactive situation.
However, with Sterilray's continuous-wave Far-UVC technology, Gordon College now has a non-chemical, non-toxic solution capable of neutralizing mold spores and preventing regrowth without requiring building evacuation. Coleman explains, “In our desire to find a sustainable solution, a proactive solution, we engaged Sterilray in a pilot project with the desire to be the tip of the spear with their technology and their response was very forthcoming: highly organized, very analytical, and data based.” Sterilray conducted robust and extensive swab testing of surfaces and air testing and helped identify the correct equipment to mitigate the air quality and mold issue. As a result, the recommendation was a Luminaire product that Coleman insists the college is “extremely happy about.”
While thinking about what Sterilray has done for Gordon College, Coleman remarks, “someone at Sterilray said to me: We’re not focused on HVAC for comfort; we’re focused on HVAC for health. I found that to be quite an inspirational comment.” By offering a way to resolve and mitigate air quality issues and mold concerns proactively and sustainably, Gordon College can now enjoy an “incredible increase in air quality” with “no trace levels of mold.” Coleman is pleased to report that “students are now able to learn in a place with far less contaminants and pathogens” in a “much cleaner and safe environment where they can think more clearly and they can perform more clearly. The benefits accrue in many directions.” He insists that with the introduction of Sterilray’s Luminaire fixture that a “total transformation” has occurred in air quality including “eliminating smells” that had stubbornly persisted in classrooms once hampered with mold. Like a breath of fresh air, Coleman recommends “to any other institution [to] engage in this technology; work with Sterilray. The benefits are immeasurable. They really exceeded our expectations. We now can assure our students that they are learning in a space that is incredibly healthy especially when compared to other institutions around the country.”
